02-05-19 CO Ag in the Classroom: Sign up for the Colorado Literacy Project!

Sign up for the Colorado Literacy Project!

Farmers and ranchers visit classrooms and read a book about agriculture! This is a FREE program.

The Colorado Literacy Project is a way to bring agriculture into the classroom while reinforcing reading comprehension. During the spring, farmers and ranchers across Colorado will visit classrooms and read a book to the students. They answer questions and talk about their farm or ranch. The class keeps the book!

The book selected for 2019 is “John Deere, That’s Who!” written by Tracy Nelson Maurer and illustrated by Tim Zeltner. Through the book, students explore how producers and consumers work together to meet human needs. This program is appropriate for students in Pre-K through fourth grades. Teacher guides and volunteer guides are provided for the different grade levels.

The sooner you sign up the better. Each school will be paired up with a farmer or rancher who will volunteer their time to visit your school or classroom. Visits will take place from February through May.

Educators are encouraged to sign up one classroom, one grade level, or the entire school! It’s preferred to have one contact per school when signing up multiple classrooms. Visits to multiple classrooms per school can take place on the same day.

Volunteers will be allowed to select the school that works best based on the information provided from the schools. A link to an online sign-up tool will be sent to all volunteers who complete the sign up form. From there, volunteers will be able to view the information submitted by participating schools (number of classes, grade levels, suggested visit dates, etc.) and choose the school(s) that you’d like to visit.
