JEFFCO Student Agricultural Day Set for November 1

October 25, 2018 – Nearly 700 Jefferson County students will be immersed in agriculture and natural resources during the upcoming “From Our Lands to Your Hands” educational event. The agricultural day will take place on Thursday, November 1 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.

The event is geared towards fourth and fifth grade students from JEFFCO Public Schools. In this third year of the event, students from 13 JEFFCO schools will be participating, representing 27 classes. This is an increase in the number of students from the previous two years.

The goal of the “From Our Lands to Your Hands” program is to introduce today’s youth to Colorado agriculture and natural resource conservation topics through fun, hands-on, educational presentations given by local farmers, ranchers and agricultural and conservation organizations and agencies. A few of the highlights include “Breakfast without bees,” a chance to milk “June” the mechanical dairy cow, the soil health tunnel, and exploring farm equipment.

The Jefferson County “From Our Lands to Your Hands” event is organized by a planning committee made up of representatives from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Colorado State University Extension Jefferson County, Rocky Mountain Farmers Union, Colorado Foundation for Agriculture, Jefferson Conservation District, and Green Mountain FFA. Funding is provided by sponsorships from the Colorado Livestock Association, Rocky Mountain Farmers Union, and Colorado Corn, as well as grants through the Colorado Association of Conservation Districts and the Colorado State Conservation Board.

“As people today become increasingly removed from a farm or ranch, it is imperative that our youth understand that the quality of their life is deeply engrained in agriculture. This event connects students to agriculture, natural resources, and most importantly the food we eat. We greatly appreciate the support of our sponsors and planning committee members to help make this third annual ‘From Our Lands to Your Hands’ event possible,” said Maria Bumgarner, agriculture conservation coordinator for the Jefferson Conservation District.
