USDA-NASS: COLORADO WINTER WHEAT VARIETIES 2018 CROP

This report provides the results of the Winter Wheat Seedings by Variety Survey, 2018 Crop, conducted by the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Mountain Regional Field Office. The survey was funded by the Colorado Wheat Administrative Committee.

Colorado wheat producers seeded an estimated 2.15 million acres to winter wheat in the fall of 2017 for harvest in 2018, down from 2.25 million acres seeded for the 2017 crop. Byrd was the most popular variety seeded in Colorado for the fourth consecutive year, planted on 28.4 percent of the acreage for the 2018 crop compared with 24.7 percent for the 2017 crop. Avery was the second most popular variety by accounting for 12.9 percent of the acreage, up from 0.7 percent for the 2017 crop. SY Monument moved up from fifth to third place by accounting for 8.6 percent of the acres seeded for 2018. Snowmass continued to occupy fourth place variety with 8.5 percent of the acreage, unchanged from last year’s crop. Brawl CL Plus moved down from third to fifth place with 7.7 percent of the acreage, a decrease from 10.8 percent of the acreage last year. The top five varieties accounted for 66.1 percent of the acreage seeded. Hatcher became the sixth leading variety with 5.0 percent of the acreage seeded, down from second place last year. Denali claimed seventh place with 2.9 percent of the acreage. SY Wolf held the eighth place ranking by accounting for 2.4 percent of the acreage seeded. LCS Mint was at ninth place with 1.6 percent of the acreage seeded this year. TAM 112 completes the top ten with 1.4 percent of the acreage seeded.

The top ten varieties represented 79.4 percent of the state’s total acreage seeded for the 2018 crop. The 2017 top ten varieties accounted for 69.2 percent of the total seeded acreage.

The survey of winter wheat producers in Colorado was not sampled to provide a direct expansion of the seeded acreage by variety or a measure of the sampling error.
