RMFU: National Farmers Union Legislative Fly-in September 10-13
Dear RMFU Member,
Rocky Mountain Farmers Union invites you to participate in the National Farmers Union Fly-in to Washington, D.C. This event gives our members the opportunity to visit directly with USDA officials, White House administration representatives, and members of Congress and their staff.
We want to make sure members of Congress can have face-to-face conversations with local community leaders from Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming. Each year, about two dozen RMFU members from our three states join NFU’s Legislative Fly-in event. As an RMFU member, you can seize this opportunity to represent your community, express your concerns and recommendations, and put a face on farming and ranching where it matters.
Every Fly-in is an enjoyable, productive, and educational experience. These events are well organized and affordable. The issues we will discuss during the fly-in will continue to develop over the summer. The 2018 Farm Bill and how we enhance the safety net, including insurance, is at top of our agenda. The continuing economic farm crisis will certainly be one of the top issues for RMFU members. Farm income has fallen 50% in the past few years so we know a federal safety net is critical. Immigration and water are certainly key issues in Western States. The conservation and use of water will always be an issue to RMFU. The timing to weigh in on these important matters should be excellent should be excellent, especially as Congress is in the early stages of writing a new farm bill which may be adopted and implemented next year.
This is an affordable and turn-key way to visit Capitol Hill, USDA, and to also see the attractions of Washington, D.C. Rocky Mountain Farmers Union provides three nights lodging for our members, based on double occupancy. The balance of expenses and individual travel arrangements will be the responsibility of you and your local chapter. Each year, Farmers Union chapters raise funds to help offset the costs of their Fly-in participants, so be sure to contact your county officers and discuss this event at your next meeting if you are interested in going to D.C. RMFU Legislative Fly-in costs are partially offset when you purchase door prize tickets at the RMFU Annual Convention in November. Direct contributions to the RMFU Booster Club also are used to cover the costs of this important annual event.
What can you expect when you get to D.C.? NFU will provide you with briefings on current issues and hints and tips for making successful congressional visits. RMFU and NFU will coordinate your schedules, so all you have to do is show up, stand up, and speak out. This is an opportunity to visit our nation’s Capitol, but consider it a working vacation with some important responsibilities. RMFU takes pride in creating direct, personal connections between our members and their representatives in Washington. That is the team goal for the trip. It’s a time for fun yet with an important purpose. Your voice will be heard and you will make a difference.
If you are interested, please contact Bill Midcap, RMFU Director of External Affairs at (303) 283-3528 or email him at firstname.lastname@example.org. Also, talk to your county officers and save the date: September 10-13. I hope to see you in D.C.
