The NWSS Catch-A-Calf Program is Underway
Our 2018 Catch-A-Calf participants have been matched with their new projects for the upcoming year. They’ve headed home with their Hereford steers from the XIT Ranch in Plains, Kan., to prep for their big debut at next year’s National Western Stock Show.
The Catch-A-Calf kids are responsible for breaking, feeding and raising these calves for almost nine months. At NWSS 2018, they turn in a record book, give a speech on their experience, and complete an interview. After showing in showmanship and live evaluation, points are tabulated to determine the Grand and Reserve Grand steers, which will sell in the coveted Jr. Livestock Auction.
We had 55 kids apply for 40 spots in this year’s program. The final contestants include 23 kids from Colorado, 9 in Wyoming, 6 in Nebraska and 2 from Kansas. Best of luck to all throughout the coming year!
