Colorado to Host Central Plains Irrigation Association Short Course
The 2017 Central Plains Irrigation Association Short Course will be held in Burlington, CO on February 21 and 22 at the Burlington Community Center. The Short Course is hosted by the Central Plains Irrigation Association, Colorado State University, University of Nebraska and Kansas State University. This meeting promotes water and soil conservation through the use of economical irrigation practices. Researchers from Colorado, Nebraska and Kansas will be presenting irrigation and crop management information.
The meeting this year will have a variety of presenters talking about a number of subjects with irrigated production. Variable rate irrigation has been a major topic of discussion for several years. We will have presentations on sensor based management for variable rate irrigation as well as the technology issues to optimize irrigation strategies with variable rate. One topic of variable rate is fertility. We will have a discussion on the opportunities and challenges with fertilizer management.
Another topic will include new technology for sprinkler design. Speakers will talk about what are really the losses and efficiency of sprinkler packages as well as presentations on mobile drip irrigation with field results.
Other topics of discussion will include irrigation management when constrained by well capacities or allocations. Timing of water as well as whole field management will be discussed on corn, sunflowers and grain sorghum for irrigation. Another session will also talk about soil management to improve productivity. What are the impacts of soil amendments such as manure or compost to improving productivity? A discussion will also look at the impacts of tillage management on corn as well as soil infiltration.
With irrigation management come irrigation scheduling. We will have multiple sessions on Colorado State University’s new irrigation scheduling tool. It is an online management tool that is also I-phone and Android capable for easy input. This will be a hands on session so please bring your computer along.
