Muriel Kuiken Hop, 95, of Greeley passed away Sept.12, 2016 at Life Care Center in Greeley. She was born at home on Aug. 13, 1921, to Jake and Alida Kuiken in Maurice, Iowa.

Muriel had two brothers and four sisters. When her father passed away, she was 12. Her mother remarried Titus Van Bruggen and he brought five sons and five daughters to the marriage so they were a family of 17 children. She stated, “We never had a lot of money, but always had a nice warm house and plenty to eat.” She started school at the age of 5 and also attended a year of college.

In 1939, she moved with Andy Hop and her sister, Nellie, to Bellflower, Calif. She married Andy on May 17, 1940, in Yuma, Ariz. They were married for 65 years before he passed away in 2005.

They moved to Colorado in 1968, where they started dairy farms for some of their children. She lived on the farm until moving to The Bridge in 2006. They purchased a cattle ranch in Walden which they owned from 1975-78. Andy and Muriel also bought a second home in Montana, where they enjoyed time with Jackie’s family through the years. They enjoyed traveling to Indio, Calif., for the winter months.

Muriel was a member of Kersey Community Church and TOPS. She loved music, enjoyed playing the piano and singing, and was a member of the Greeley Women’s Choir for many years.

Muriel is survived by her son, Jay (Ele) Hop; daughters, Nadine (Hank) DeJong, Jackie (Arthur) Hommes and Elaine (Greg) Danhoff ; daughter-in-law, Maureen (Larry) Hop-Hergenreder; and stepbrother, Ted (Geri) Van Bruggen. She also is survived by 18 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren; and many in-laws, nieces and nephews who were very precious to her.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Andy Hop; son, Rick Hop; daughter-in-law, Paula Hop; and grandsons, Bradley Hop and Rodney DeJong; grandson-in-laws, Gene Alles and Larry Connolly.

The family would like thank the caregivers at The Bridge and Life Care for their services. She loved both places and their wonderful staff who cared for her over the years.
