to weaken child nutrition programs

DENVER, CO – June 14, 2016 – RMFU is encouraging you to participate in a national call to action around Child Nutrition Reauthorization which is the federal bill for all school food programs, farm to school, WIC, and more.

Here is the skinny: The U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce passed theImproving Child Nutrition and Education Act of 2016 (H.R. 5003) on May 18, and it soon may head to the House floor for a vote. Contrary to its name, this bill would significantly weaken the child nutrition programs, especially the proposal to pilot block grants for school meals.

Block grants are harmful because:

  • Funding to states would be static and unresponsive to inflation, recession or population growth.
  • There would be no requirement for access to both school breakfast and lunch.
  • States participating in the block-grant pilot would no longer be required to meet the nutrition standards, which are a critical component of efforts to decrease both child malnutrition and obesity. (Read more here.)
