04-15-13 Circle A Family Rodeo Kicks Off 2013 Season in Keenesburg on May 11th…

Posted by Brian Allmer on April 15, 2013

CLICK HERE to learn more about Circle A Family Rodeo…

Circle A Family RodeoCircle A Family Rodeo will kick off it’s 2013 season on Saturday, May 11 at South East Weld County Fairgrounds in Keenesburg, CO.

Children 5 years old and under can compete in the Pee Wee division in events such as the goat tail pull, mutton bustin’, and stick horse race. The Youth, Junior, and Senior divisions host kids and young adults ages 6-18, where they can compete in rodeo events including steer riding, poles, and flags. Circle A Family Rodeo truly lives up to it’s name as even adults have a division in which they can barrel race, breakaway rope, and team rope, in addition to many other events. Every family member who wishes to participate can do so in one of the five age divisions, and everyone can have a great weekend!

It is the goal of Circle A Family Rodeo to provide a place where families can spend quality time together and compete in a positive atmosphere. It is a place where everyone can learn the basics without a lot of pressure to perform. Members can be as competitive, or as relaxed as they choose to be based on what is right for them. Kerri Lemmons of Hudson, CO enjoys that “everyone supports each other and is willing to help those that need some extra guidance.” Payton Flack of Arthur, NE feels it really is a family rodeo where she learns a lot, and loves “that we can go and hang out with friends, family, and still rodeo.”

The rodeo is operated entirely by volunteers, and a large part of funding towards the tremendous year end awards is donated by generous sponsors and local businesses. The committee encourages the membership to patronize these businesses to show their appreciation. Sponsors also are listed, with a link, on the Circle A Family Rodeo web page, the name of their business is announced several times over the course of each performance, and they are cordially invited to attend the year end awards banquet. In addition, certain levels of sponsorship may have their names on awards such as saddles, belt buckles, and stirrups. This family oriented rodeo and continuation of our Western heritage would not be possible without their support.

04-08-13 ASTHMA AND ALLERGY FOUNDATION OF AMERICA SAYS COLORADO SCHOOLS SHOULD STOCK LIFE-SAVING ALLERGY MEDICATIONS…

Posted by Brian Allmer on April 8, 2013

AAFA-Asthma and Allergy Foundation for America logoFOUNDATION URGES COLORADO SENATE TO PASS HB 1171

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) supports school policies that promote access to life-saving medications to treat students and staff who experience severe allergic reactions.  The Foundation commends State Rep. Dianne Primavera for introducing HB 1171 in the Colorado House of Representatives.  This bill would supply schools with epinephrineauto-injectors, allow epinephrine auto-injectors to be used in emergencies, appropriately train school personnel, and address liability concerns for those who use this medication in good-faith. AAFA urges the Colorado House of Representatives and Senate to pass this bill before the legislative session closes.
Food allergy prevalence is rising, especially in young children.  For the 6 million children that have been diagnosed with a food allergy to nuts, eggs, milk, wheat, soy or any of the other common food items that can trigger life-threatening anaphylaxis, the most severe type of allergic reaction, the everyday act of eating carries potential for worry.  “No one can predict how severe a food allergic reaction will be,” said Charlotte Collins, vice president for policy and programs at AAFA. “It is essential for schools to prepare by stocking epinephrine, the life-saving medication for food allergy emergencies”.
Epinephrine Auto Injectors Save Lives

When a person comes into contact with a food allergen, an immune response is triggered and anaphylaxis may occur.  Anaphylaxis is a serious medical condition, which can be life-threatening if rapidly developing symptoms are not treated promptly.  Epinephrine is the medication indicated by medical experts as first-aid treatment for a severe allergic reaction to food.  With prompt injection, epinephrine is nearly always effective in the treatment of anaphylaxis.  Delay increases the risk of poor outcomes and even fatalities.  The epinephrine auto-injector is relatively easy to use, quick to administer and is low-cost to maintain an adequate supply.  The facts are simple: when available, epinephrine auto-injectors save lives.
Children spend a sizable amount of their time in school, whether for daily instruction or recreational activities.  Therefore, schools must be prepared to address the safety of their students.  The entire school team should be involved in developing an emergency action plan.  Through an open, proactive, and collaborative process, students with food allergies can be safer in the school environment.
States Are Acting to Prepare Schools for Emergencies

02-25-13 CHSAA Begins 92nd Year of Spring Sports…

Posted by Brian Allmer on February 25, 2013

CHSAA_LogoOfficial Spring Practice Begins February 25

Aurora, Colo. – In spite of the winter storm the state has just experienced, the Colorado High School Activities Association’s 92nd year of spring sports begins Monday, February 25, 2013 for baseball, girls’ golf, boys’ and girls’ lacrosse, girls’ soccer, boys’ swimming and boys’ and girls’ track & field.

“The beginning of any new sports season practice remains one of the most exciting days in a student’s life. But even beyond that, that first day of practice offers all of us the opportunity to get back to the community-based roots that high school sports provide. Look around the state and you will see that each school is the hub of the activities in its neighborhood,” CHSAA Commissioner Paul Angelico said.

Teams may scrimmage on March 2 in baseball, lacrosse, soccer, swimming and track, while golf and tennis can scrimmage starting February 28. The first contest for golf and tennis is February 28, while the other sports will have to wait for their first contest until March 7.

In May, 1921, a group of superintendents and principals met in Boulder and organized the Colorado High School Athletic Conference. The purpose of this organization was to better regulate and develop the interscholastic school athletic program.

01-12-13 *CHSAA NEWS* Class 1A State Basketball Moves to 1st Bank Center in Broomfield…Complete Schedule Below…

Posted by Brian Allmer on February 12, 2013

CHSAA_LogoAurora, CO – A scheduling conflict with the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland has forced the Colorado High School Activities Association to move its Class 1A State Basketball Championships to Broomfield’s 1StBank Center on March 14-16, CHSAA officials announced today.

“Somehow there was a scheduling conflict between the CHSAA dates and the Colorado Eagles at the Budweiser events Center.  Fortunately, it was discovered at a time where we were able to find a quality facility for this classification. It is somewhat frustrating to the 1A schools and the CHSAA as we try to find a more permanent home for them. However, we are pleased that the 1stBank Center is available for these games,” Assistant Commissioner Bert Borgmann, the CHSAA administrator in charge of the sport, said.

By establishing the new site now, Borgmann noted, it gives schools about a month to make alternate plans for housing and travel. The new site is located at 11450 Broomfield Lane in Broomfield just off US36 between Church Ranch Boulevard and Wadsworth Blvd.

Other state championship sites include: 2A – Massari Arena, Colorado State University-Pueblo; Moby Gym, Colorado State University-Fort Collins; 4A/5A – CU Events Center, Boulder.

01-30-13 CHSAA Joins Multiple States in PPV Sampling CHSAA.tv to experiment with subscription service for playoffs…

Posted by Brian Allmer on January 30, 2013

CLICK HERE to watch/listen to the Boys/Girls Championship Games LIVE on CHSAA.TV!

PlayONLogo300RGB (1)The Colorado High School Activities Association has joined with several other states to experiment with consumer subscriptions, commonly referred to as Pay Per View, to its state playoff broadcasts. Costs for the events will range in price depending on the length of the playoff offerings.

“Play On! Sports has asked us to participate in an experiment with subscription service. For comprehensive, quality coverage of high school sports to become a viable product, we need to research reasonable dual revenue models like other sports properties,” CHSAA Commissioner Paul Angelico said. “Live events have limited shelf life, are expensive to produce and advertising revenue alone cannot support the expense involved in that production. We need to experiment with this now to determine its viability.”

Play On! Sports, which is the parent company of CHSAA.tv, has developed a simple pricing structure for Colorado and will begin with the CHSAA’s first state championship event – Girls State Swimming & Diving Championships. That will be followed up by all other winter and spring playoff broadcasts, including the State Wrestling Tournament and State Basketball Championships.

“We expect some of our constituents to be concerned, but at the same time we know that in order to develop a sustainable product, we have to find a way to make these broadcasts affordable for those producing them as well as for the consumer,” CHSAA Assistant Commissioner Bert Borgmann noted.

The pricing structure for the Winter State Championships is:

Day Pass – $3.95

Weekly Pass – $6.95

Monthly Pass – $9.95

While this is an experiment for the next two sports seasons, Play On! Sports will determine its success and how future broadcasts on CHSAA.tv will be delivered. Games aired on the CHSAA.tv linear partner s, such as ROOT Sports, are not included in the PPV sampling. The attached is a question & answer document from Play On! Sports for your information.

12-04-12 CHSAA Hall of Fame Announces Class of 2012…Billups, Blanford-Green, Dorsey, Fagerlund, Lewis, Palmeri & Strain…

Posted by Brian Allmer on December 4, 2012

CHSAA_LogoAurora, Colo. – The latest class of the Colorado High School Activities Association Hall of Fame, the 24th in the history of the organization, features a broad range of inductees including three former student participants, a long-time official, a pair of highly successful coaches and a veteran public address announcer for many state championship events.

Joining the CHSAA Hall of Fame from the participant ranks are Chauncey Billups (George Washington), Rhonda Blanford-Green (Aurora Central) and Duane Lewis (Burlington). They are joined by volleyball coach Pam Fagerlund (Flagler) and former Manual, Denver South and George Washington coach Joe Strain, along with Frank Palmeri, whose 50-year public address career in Jefferson County also included five decades as the voice of the CHSAA’s State Wrestling Championships. Blanford-Green also served as an administrator for the CHSAA for 14 years before becoming the executive director of the Nebraska Schools Activities Association last July, while Lewis went on to a successful teaching and coaching career at several Colorado schools.

“Earning a place in the CHSAA Hall of Fame is an honor so few receive. Yet each class represents the thousands upon thousands of participants, coaches, administrators, officials and significant contributors that give so much to the state’s high school athletics and activities. The Class of 2012 reveals the breadth and depth that Colorado high school athletics and activities represent in our member schools. Each of the inductees has left a snapshot of his/her impact on this organization in a positive way,” CHSAA Commissioner Paul Angelico said in making the announcement.

“I know it seems odd that it has taken so long for some of these people to be inducted into the CHSAA Hall of Fame, especially Chauncey Billups. But, induction is predicated on several things, including being nominated and the ability to be in attendance at the induction ceremony. For many deserving people, they have yet to be nominated. In the case of Chauncey, we wanted him to be in attendance because he is the prototypical inductee – success at all levels, leadership qualities, representing his sport at the highest level. All seven of these people display these qualities. We are very proud of these seven individuals. They are high school athletics and activities,” CHSAA Hall of Fame administrator Bert Borgmann said.

The Class of 2012 will be inducted during a banquet ceremony on Wednesday, January 23, 2013, at the Red Lion Hotel Denver Southeast (I‑225 and Parker). Individual tickets may be purchased for $45 each by contacting the CHSAA. The festivities get underway at 6:30 p.m. Seating is limited.

The selection of the three student participants to the CHSAA Hall of Fame puts the total number of participants in the hall at 53. There are now 54 coaches, 27 administrators, 14 officials and six significant service contributors enshrined in the CHSAA Hall of Fame that began in 1989. There are also two teams in the hall. The Hall of Fame now features 156 inductees.

Biographies of the newest additions to the hall include: Read the rest of this entry »

08-08-12 CHSAA Begins 92nd Year of High School Activities…

Posted by Brian Allmer on August 8, 2012

Prep Fall Sports Practices Start August 13; Boys’ Golf Starts August 6

Aurora, Colo. ‑‑ The Colorado High School Activities Association’s 92nd year of sanctioning high school athletics in the state begins when boys’ golf athletes take to the practice greens on Monday, August 6. All other fall sports begin formal practice on Monday, August 13.

Practices in all fall sports for boys and girls, with the exception of boys’ golf, can formally begin on August 13, with the first day of competition in cross country, boys’ soccer, girls’ field hockey, girls’ gymnastics, girls’ volleyball, football and spirit slated to start on August 30. Competition in boys’ golf commences August 9, boys’ tennis on August 16 and girls’ softball August 17.

“The beginning of fall practice remains one of the most exciting days in a student’s life. But even beyond that, that first day of practice offers all of us the opportunity to get back to the community-based roots that high school sports provide. Look around the state and you will see that each school is the hub of the activities in its neighborhood,” CHSAA Commissioner Paul Angelico said. “When the two major fires and the horrific shooting in Aurora occurred, where did people turn to as the center of the community? The local high schools. We forget sometimes that our 340 schools are the heart of our communities. As we go in to the new school year, we have a chance to reflect on that point and to help make them a stronger cornerstone in the 193 communities that are the CHSAA.”
