Posted by Brian Allmer on June 26, 2013

ESA-2Ranchester– The annual Environmental Stewardship Tour, hosted by the Wyoming Stock Growers Association, Wyoming Department of Agriculture, and Montana Stockgrowers will be held at the Padlock Ranch, near Ranchester, Tuesday July 9, beginning at 8 a.m.

The Padlock Ranch and Wayne and Judi Fahsholtz are recipients of the 2013 Leopold Conservation Award, Wyoming’s premier recognition of private land stewardship. The bus tour will showcase the excellent land, water and wildlife management efforts that led to the Padlock receiving the award.

A full day of activities is planned, including a chuck wagon lunch on the Crow Indian Reservation sponsored by the Montana Stockgrowers Association.  In addition to the bus tour of the ranch, there will be stewardship presentations and an evening social and banquet.  Attendees are welcome to join in any and all of the activities, transportation from the Padlock Headquarters will be provided.

On 500,000 acres spanning the Wyoming–Montana border, Padlock Ranch operates a sustainable and profitable cattle operation raising natural beef.

“Successful ranches enable the community to continue to have vast amounts of open space that would otherwise be used for uses that would not enhance water and air quality, wildlife habitat and provide recreational opportunities to the public,” said Wayne Fahsholtz, President and CEO of Padlock Ranch. “When I came here 10 years ago, we really had the opportunity to look at our practices and decide what we needed to do to have as good a ranch as we could and to grow as much grass as possible.”

Padlock Ranch is owned by the Homer Scott family and has been operating since 1943. Scott and his wife Mildred started the operation on 3,000 acres and continued to grow the property to its current size.

The Environmental Stewardship Tour and Leopold Conservation Award are part of the Wyoming Stock Growers Association’s Environmental Stewardship Program. Partners in this program include the Wyoming Stock Growers Association, Wyoming Department of Agriculture, Sand County Foundation, and Peabody Energy.
