May 10, 2013 – GREELEY, CO – Beginning May 20, 2013 the Weld County FSA Office will begin accepting new CRP offers under General Signup 45. The signup runs through June 14, 2013 and is available for land that has been cropped 4 out 6 years between 2002 and 2007 or is expiring out of CRP on September 30, 2013. Land that expired out of CRP in a previous year and remains in a permanent grass cover is also eligible for enrollment.
The goals of CRP contracts are to retire cropland from production while reducing soil and water erosion and improving air quality and wildlife habitat. In turn farmers receive annual rental payments from USDA for the life of the contract which is 10 years.
Land offered during general CRP signup competes for acceptance at the local and national level. Each offer is given a score known as an Environmental Benefits Index (EBI) which is determined by the soil types and location. After the signup is completed the Secretary of Agriculture will determine the number of acres to accept then farms will be ranked based on their EBI.
Land being offered for CRP can be enhanced to obtain additional points which in turn increase the EBI. Enhancements consist of planting native grasses along with forbs or legumes on at least 51% of the acreage or adding pollinators to at least 10% of the contract acreage.
Offers must be submitted to FSA during the enrollment period of May 20 to June 14, 2013. Appointments are encouraged. Call the Weld County FSA Office to schedule an appointment call (970) 356-8097 extension 2.
