The number of cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in Colorado feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or larger was estimated at 990,000 head as of March 1, 2013. The latest inventory was 2 percent below last month’s inventory, and 9 percent below March 1, 2012 inventory. Cattle feeders with 1,000 head or larger capacity marketed an estimated 170,000 head of fed cattle during February 2013. This was 3 percent below the previous month’s marketings, and 15 percent below marketings one year earlier. An estimated 160,000 cattle and calves were placed on feed during February, down 16 percent from January 2013 placements and down 3 percent from a year ago. Of the number placed in February, 19 percent weighed less than 600 pounds, 16 percent weighed from 600 to 699 pounds, 31 percent weighed from 700 to 799 pounds, and 34 percent weighed 800 pounds and greater. Other disappearance for February, at 10,000 head, was down 5,000 head from last year, but up 5,000 head from last month.
Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 10.9 million head on March 1, 2013. The inventory was 7 percent below March 1, 2012. Placements in feedlots during February totaled 1.48 million, 14 percent below 2012. Net placements were 1.42 million head. During February, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 355,000, 600-699 pounds were 270,000, 700-799 pounds were 407,000, and 800 pounds and greater were 450,000. Placements are the lowest for February since the series began in 1996. Marketings of fed cattle during February totaled 1.64 million, 7 percent below 2012. Other disappearance totaled 60,000 during February, 35 percent below 2012.
