08-10-12 HSUS, OCM Form Alliance to Destroy Beef Checkoff…

– Animal Rights Organization Partners with Fringe Farm Group

WASHINGTON (Aug. 10, 2012) – National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) President J.D. Alexander expressed disgust following an announcement that the Organization for Competitive Markets (OCM) has formed a partnership with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) to destroy more than 25 years of market development and consumer demand building by the Beef Checkoff Program.

Specifically, OCM announced yesterday evening that it will file a lawsuit today seeking an injunction against the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service, Cattlemen’s Beef Board and the Beef Promotion Operating Committee. OCM President and Director Fred Stokes stated during the press briefing that HSUS is helping fund its efforts to file the lawsuit. OCM claims to advocate for a fair, competitive agricultural marketplace; however, in doing so it partnered with an organization known for its anti-agriculture agenda. According to Alexander, independent research shows the beef checkoff is supported by nearly 75 percent of cattlemen and women.

“HSUS is an organization going state by state vowing to end production agriculture by outlawing scientifically validated production practices in animal agriculture. Their efforts put people out of business and often jeopardize the well-being of livestock,” said Alexander.

OCM made no secrets about its connection to HSUS during the press conference.

Stokes said, “OCM and every cowboy out there owes a deep gratitude to the Humane Society of the United States.”

Alexander, who is also an independent cattle feeder from Pilger, Neb., said it is paramount for cattlemen and cattlewomen to know that OCM is working with an extremist animal rights group to disable a program dedicated to building demand for beef.

“Their actions will impact consumers by increasing protein costs at the grocery store. They are no friend to family farmers and ranchers or consumers and will be challenged at every corner by NCBA,” said Alexander. “Animal agriculture is vital to sustaining food production and we will not sit by and allow these organizations to stifle our ability to mitigate hunger and feed people here and abroad.”

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) has represented America’s cattle producers since 1898, preserving the heritage and strength of the industry through education and public policy.  As the largest association of cattle producers, NCBA works to create new markets and increase demand for beef.  Efforts are made possible through membership contributions. To join, contact NCBA at 1-866-BEEF-USA or membership@beef.org.

  1. Has anyone heard of the animal rights groups paying for a students tuition and expenses through vet school, so they can be USDA Inspectors in Charge (IOC) @ packing plants only to create problems.

WHO is this yahoo that’s head of OCM? You have got to be KIDDING! Is Stokes naive, brainwashed, or bought off? The H$U$ is against rodeos and against animal agriculture. I’d be more likely to say that cowboys should run the H$U$ out of town on a rail!!!! The OCM is making a grave mistake partnering with a vegan-led, “animal rights”-influenced organization that happens to have a very good con man leading them and spewing out the propaganda mill BIG LIES [like the Third Reich did before WWII].

Thank you for sharing! I have to wonder why you are not mentioning the current rule change within the USDA/APHIS titled retail pet store? It has any domesticated animal in there. In light of USDA’s current activities I would think you would be interested in why they feel the need to put any domesticated animal in a “pet” rule change. They are saying if a animal is sold for food/fiber than the producer does not have to license with the USDA. But keep in mind this is the same organization that fined a family 4 million dollars last year for saling a hand full of rabbits as pets. Horses are not sold for food/fiber. So they get the ranchers. Do we know where every cow we sale through the sale barn ends up? Please look into this matter. Considering the USDA has hired people straight from the HSUS I hope you see we have a real problem brewing here. While you are at it check out the fines if someone is found to be non compliant. Up to 10,000 per day per head. They will have my farm in a matter of days. Let us not forget the meatless monday fiasco a few weeks back. These things are not accidents. Nor is the new lunches being served in our schools this year.. Big brother is coming and he is strongly nudging us into a vegetarian diet.

The USDA has hired Sarah L. Conant a former employee of HSUS who was responsible for attacking farmers. She is now the director of regulations and enforcement. She has been systematically fining all small animal breeders out of existence. No warnings no attempt to improve you pay your half million dollar fine and sign a paper that says you can never raise animals again.oes the name Sarah Conant rings a bell? It should. She was the USDA tyrant that infiltrated into her position through her bullying as a Humane Society of the United States advocate that went after John and Judy Dollarhite, whose rabbit business was set up to teach responsibility to their son. It turns out Conant is making a lot of enemies in the family farm business and other small business agriculture ventures.

I bring your attention to the latest article that brings up the evil that is Conant and her actions in the USDA. The article further expands on Conant’s employment at the USDA and her past experience with HSUS, which was first examined on this Web site.

Ask you representative why Sara l Conant is even working for the USDA. She should be fired. Cass Sunstein the avowed animal rights Czar of our regulatory agency for OBAMA hired this nut and now he feels comfortable leaving now that he has left her in charge of ending all use of animals. She is working over time to do that. She has put out of business three companies already with half million dollar fines leaving only two left and several small businesses. These were business that never had a complaint or violation in the 20 years they had been in business. One month after she comes in she hires all new animal rights investigators and ships them in to inspect business from other states. Then comes the half million dollar fines for fake charges. This woman and all ARS must be stopped. She is destroying our country. She is a traitor to our constitution and rights.

    from High Plains Journal

Joe Luter is the CEO of Smithfield Foods. They are the world’s largest pork producer; from birth to girth they own the business. Would anyone mind if he were hired by the USDA and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service to oversee meat inspection and regulations regarding how pork is grown and harvested? Oh my goodness! It would be sheer madness if anybody were even to hint that it should happen.
Why then is Sarah L. Conant serving as the chief enforcer for APHIS within the USDA? She has spent the majority of her life trying to end animal agriculture and being an activist for animal rights. Her last employer (assuming she is no longer still collecting a check from them) was the Humane Society of the United States. HSUS is the world’s largest animal rights organization, yet nobody said a word when USDA hired her. Why not?
Kansas Sen. Jerry Moran asked some questions on the Senate floor that shed a tremendous amount of light on the current relationship between the USDA and HSUS. Apparently, even though nobody I know in animal agriculture had any knowledge of this, there was an animal welfare forum being planned by the USDA and organized by HSUS. That is until the good senator from Kansas got wind of the event. Here are the highlights of what he said:
“The ironic thing about this forum is that there is little science involved. It is nothing more than, in my view, the Department of Agriculture spending taxpayer dollars on a forum to provide the Humane Society of the United States a public forum to espouse its anti-agriculture views.
“If the Department of Agriculture was interested in science, why would it allow an animal rights organization to steer its agenda?”
So I ask this question: Just exactly how many people with ties to HSUS are actually planted in the USDA and APHIS at this time?
I am not the only one asking by the way. Frank Losey, an attorney with no ties to animal agriculture whatsoever, is also asking. In fact, he submitted a formal complaint with the Inspector General on Aug. 30 suggesting that not only is there a tremendous conflict of interest with the USDA hiring Sarah L. Conant but that the record surrounding her employment seems to have gone missing.
In the same calendar year, lawsuits were filed by Conant on behalf of the HSUS against the USDA only for her to resign her position with HSUS and two days later be appointed to a newly created position with APHIS.
Another question that Losey is posing about HSUS is how can this nonprofit organization, with annual revenue in excess of $100 million, spend less than 1 percent of that money on animal shelters. They are so busy lobbying but never seem to get the attention of the IRS. We know for a fact that thousands of letters have been sent to the IRS asking them to conduct a full-blown investigation into how this organization can so openly admit to breaking the law and continue to get away with it.
I so often ask you do to something because of the columns I have written. Friends, I have honestly never felt the importance of your input more than I do on these two issues. Call your senator and tell them an investigation needs to take place regarding the relationship between USDA, formerly known as “the people’s department” and HSUS, the wealthiest animal rights organization in the world. Ask them how Sarah L. Conant can be employed by the USDA when it is clearly a violation of the Conflict of Interest.
Secondly, ask how it is that HSUS can maintain nonprofit status when they clearly are a lobbying entity, which is explicitly forbidden under nonprofit laws. Complacency is our only real challenge at the end of the day, not HSUS. Please understand that and get busy digging to help us root out the moles in this system before they destroy our entire foundation!
