01-05-12 CSU Students Host Ag Adventure Exhibit at National Western Stock Show
Posted by Brian Allmer on January 5, 2012

FORT COLLINS - A Colorado State University student-run program that introduces elementary-aged children to the science of agriculture and the sources of their food returns this year to the National Western Stock Show in Denver. The Ag Adventure exhibit includes hands-on, interactive displays from a variety of commodity groups and trade organizations.
Collaboration on the exhibit includes the Colorado Department of Agriculture, Colorado Farm Bureau and commodity groups representing beef, dairy, sheep, wool, eggs, potatoes and vegetables, corn, grain, landscape and plants, and honey producers.
“This is a chance for our College of Ag students to work side by side with our industry partners. Not only will this expand our student’s working knowledge of agriculture, but it helps them network in an industry that they plan to work in,” said Nancy Irlbeck, associate dean in the College of Agricultural Sciences at Colorado State and adviser of the Ag Adventure exhibit.
Ag Adventure teaches school groups and other visitors about livestock production, crop production, animal husbandry, land stewardship and the “farm-to-plate” process through a series of hands-on activities.
The idea behind the exhibit is an outgrowth of an annual event in which CSU’s College of Agricultural Sciences participates with the Poudre School District in Fort Collins. Each fall, nearly 2,000 Poudre School District third-graders tour CSU’s Agricultural Research, Development and Education Center located north of Fort Collins.
The Ag Adventure exhibit at the National Western Stock Show will involve about 20,000 school-aged children from around the Denver metro area. Guided tours are offered during busy school days, but self-guided tours are also available during off-hours.
“This is designed to raise awareness of agriculture in everyday lives,” Irlbeck said. “Plus, it might spark an interest in agriculture in some of these kids.”
In all, about 70,000 people visited the exhibit last year.
The Ag Adventure exhibit is open daily from Jan. 7-22 during the 2012 National Western Stock Show. The exhibit is located on the third floor of the Hall of Education across from the Colorado State University booth at the National Western Complex, 4655 Humboldt St., Denver.

“District Judge to Hear Case Against Monsanto”
District Court Judge Naomi Buchwald will hear oral arguments on January 31st in the case of the Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association VS Monsanto. Buchwald serves the Southern District of New York and will decide on Monsanto’s motion to dismiss the Association’s case. The landmark lawsuit, filed in March 2011, challenges the validity of Monsanto’s transgenic/GMO patents and seeks court protection for family farmers who may become contaminated by Monsanto seed.
Jim Gerritsen, President of lead plaintiff, OSGATA, says – last August we submitted our written rebuttal and it made clear that Monsanto’s motion was without merit. Our legal team, from the Public Patent Foundation, is looking forward to orally presenting our position. Gerritsen adds – we are anxious that this case go to trial as soon as possible so that our innocent farmers may receive Court protection.
The 83 family farmers, small and family owned seed businesses, and agricultural organizations comprising the organic plaintiff group represent over 300-thousand individuals.

01-05-12 *USDA NEWS* We Can’t Wait: The White House Announces Federal and Private Sector Commitments to Provide Employment Opportunities for Nearly 180,000 Youth
Posted by Brian Allmer on January 5, 2012

Today, the White House announced Summer Jobs+, a new call to action for businesses, non-profits, and government to work together to provide pathways to employment for low-income and disconnected youth in the summer of 2012. The President proposed $1.5 billion for high-impact summer jobs and year-round employment for low-income youth ages 16-24 in the American Jobs Act as part of the Pathways Back to Work fund. When Congress failed to act, the Federal government and private sector came together to commit to creating nearly 180,000 employment opportunities for low-income youth in the summer of 2012, with a goal of reaching 250,000 employment opportunities by the start of summer, at least 100,000 of which will be placements in paid jobs and internships. Today’s announcement is the latest in a series of executive actions the Obama Administration is taking to strengthen the economy and move the country forward because we can’t wait for Congress to act.
“America’s young people face record unemployment, and we need to do everything we can to make sure they’ve got the opportunity to earn the skills and a work ethic that come with a job. It’s important for their future, and for America’s. That’s why I proposed a summer jobs program for youth in the American Jobs Act – a plan that Congress failed to pass. America’s youth can’t wait for Congress to act. This is an all-hands-on-deck moment. That’s why today, we’re launching Summer Jobs+, a joint initiative that challenges business leaders and communities to join my Administration in providing hundreds of thousands of summer jobs for America’s youth,” said President Obama.
“While young people who are currently disconnected from school or work are not contributing to our economy, we see these young people as ‘Opportunity Youth’ – because of the untapped potential they bring to the Nation. Today, the White House challenged all sectors to go all-in and work together in creating pathways to youth employment. Summer jobs are an important step – and to stay on the path to success, Opportunity Youth need social supports and access to relevant education, mentoring and training. This spring, the White House Council for Community Solutions will participate in community discussions nationwide to learn from best efforts by youth, families, government, business, educators, and nonprofits to connect young people to meaningful career opportunities,” said Patty Stonesifer, Chair of the White House Council for Community Solutions (WHCCS).
