11-11-11 USDA OpEd* USDA Ag Secretary Vilsack’s Weekly Column: Expanding Trade with Vietnam and China

Posted by Brian Allmer on November 11, 2011

Next week I will travel to Vietnam and China on behalf of USDA and our nation’s farmers, ranchers and agricultural businesses. I want to strengthen trade relationships we have with both nations, support the American brand, and create more opportunities for American producers to sell their goods throughout the Asia Pacific region.

This year, China moved ahead of Mexico and Canada to become our number one export market for U.S. agricultural goods. In the past decade, the Vietnamese market has also become increasingly important for our farmers, ranchers and growers – jumping from the 50th to 15th position as a market for U.S. farm exports.

Overall, U.S. agricultural exports are on track to reach new highs this year, helping support more than one million American jobs and bolstering our nation’s economy with a record trade surplus expected to exceed $42 billion.

This progress is no accident. Our farmers are the most productive in the world, and ‘Grown In America’ products and known for their quality at an affordable price.

11-11-11 WELD FOOD BANK IN NEED OF TURKEYS AND HOLIDAY FOOD

Posted by Brian Allmer on November 11, 2011

GREELEY, November 11, 2011 –  The holiday season is the busiest time of year at Weld Food Bank, and this year is no exception.  The food bank continues to see an increase in the amount of Weld County residents who are in need of food assistance.  As the number of food recipients increases, the food supply at Weld Food Bank dwindles.

During the holiday season Weld Food Bank works with their 104 Partner Agencies to ensure everyone has enough to eat.  These Partner Agencies request holiday food items and then use them to prepare Thanksgiving and Christmas meal baskets and to provide hot meals on those days when most families are sitting down to a home cooked meal.  It is the job of Weld Food Bank to collect this food for the Agencies so they can provide these meals and baskets.

AMES, Iowa (RuralWire) November 10, 2011—As the Nov. 23 deadline for the Joint Select Committee on the Budget to trim $1.2 trillion from federal spending looms, National Farmers Organization has announced its support for a dairy reform proposal, The Dairy Security Act of 2011.

11-11-11 Veterans Day — Honoring All Who Served…

Posted by Brian Allmer on November 11, 2011

The Veterans Day National Committee recently selected the National Veterans Day poster for 2011 designed by John Magine, a Vietnam Veteran who works as a visual information specialist at the VA Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Fla. The poster was recently shipped to VA facilities nationwide.

National Veterans Day Ceremony

The Veterans Day National Ceremony is held each year on November 11th at Arlington National Cemetery . The ceremony commences precisely at 11:00 a.m. with a wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknowns and continues inside the Memorial Amphitheater with a parade of colors by veterans’ organizations and remarks from dignitaries. The ceremony is intended to honor and thank all who served in the United States Armed Forces.

The Veterans Day National Committee also selects a number of regional sites for Veterans Day observances throughout the country. From stirring parades and ceremonies to military exhibits and tributes to distinguished veterans, these events serve as models for other communities to follow in planning their own observances.

11-11-11 *The White House* Presidential Proclamation — Veterans Day, 2011

Posted by Brian Allmer on November 11, 2011

VETERANS DAY, 2011

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION

Today, our Nation comes together to honor our veterans and commemorate the legacy of profound service and sacrifice they have upheld in pursuit of a more perfect Union.  Through their steadfast defense of America’s ideals, our service members have ensured our country still stands strong, our founding principles still shine, and nations around the world know the blessings of freedom.  As we offer our sincere appreciation and respect to our veterans, to their families, to those who are still in harm’s way, and to those we have laid to rest, let us rededicate ourselves to serving them as well as they have served the United States of America.

Our men and women in uniform are bearers of a proud military tradition that has been dutifully passed forward — from generation to generation — for more than two centuries.  In times of war and peace alike, our veterans have served with courage and distinction in the face of tremendous adversity, demonstrating an unfaltering commitment to America and our people.  Many have made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve the country they loved.  The selflessness of our service members is unmatched, and they remind us that there are few things more fundamentally American than doing our utmost to make a difference in the lives of others.

11-11-11 Why is Veterans Day On the 11th of November Every Year?

Posted by Brian Allmer on November 11, 2011

Veterans Day is an American federal holiday honoring military veterans. It is also a holiday in many countries around the world every November 11, where it is Armistice or Remembrance Day. It marks the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I.

Today Veterans Day honors veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice. Veterans Day is always on November 11, regardless of the day of the week on which it falls.

The Library of Congress (LOC) maintains the Veterans History Project (VHP). The VHP collects and preserves the remembrances of American war veterans and civilian workers who supported them.
