09-10-11 *National Day of Prayer Task Force* Remembering September 11th…‏

Posted by Brian Allmer on September 10, 2011

National Day of Prayer Task Force - Header“Time is passing. Yet, for the United States of America, there will be no forgetting September the 11th. We will remember every rescuer who died in honor. We will remember every family that lives in grief. We will remember the fire and ash, the last phone calls, the funerals of the children. “ - President George W. Bush, November 11, 2001

Remembering September 11th

On September 11, 2001, the United States witnessed first hand the horror of terrorism and the barbarism of extremists willing to take any and all life. America the great, an impervious super-power, had been wounded leaving behind a scar that remains for generations to come. I still remember the day as though it were yesterday. The ache in my stomach nearly paralyzed my body as I froze in disbelief while the events unfolded before my eyes on television. Every passing minute felt like an eternity as I watched my fellow Americans suffering – lost in confusion and gripped with fear of the unknown. Instantly, my heart was broken for my country. The sorrow I felt was as intense as I have ever experienced and it is a feeling I will not soon forget. In those hours and weeks to follow, we were a country no longer divided by ethnicity, socio-economics, or even politics – we were able to put aside our differences and come together as a nation united.

Patriot Day

September 11, 2001, was a defining moment in American history. On that day, an attack on our nation left many innocent people dead. By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001, the United States Congress designated September 11 of each year as Patriot Day. On Patriot Day, we remember the victims, and pay tribute to the firefighters, police officers, emergency personnel, and ordinary citizens who risked their lives so others might live.

World Trade Center (WTC) Memorial
The 9/11 Memorial dedication will be held September 11, 2011, the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, during a ceremony for victims’ families. The memorial will open to the public on September 12, 2011, and will welcome visitors who have reserved advance passes.

The 9/11 Memorial is located at the site of the former WTC complex, and occupies approximately half of the 16-acre site. The memorial features two waterfalls and reflecting pools, each about an acre in size, set within the “footprints” of the twin towers.

Pentagon Memorial
Shortly after the attack, Congress authorized the U.S. Secretary of Defense to create a permanent memorial on the grounds of the Pentagon.

Flight 93 National Memorial
During the September 11 attack, four hijacked commercial airliners struck targets on the ground. The actions of the 40 passengers and crew aboard Flight 93 prevented an attack on the U.S. Capitol orWhite House. 09-10-11 Alltech Breaks Ground on $4.5M Distillery Project

Posted by Brian Allmer on September 10, 2011

Mike Edwards, project manager at Alltech; Deirdre Lyons, corporate design director at Alltech; Jim Gray, mayor of Lexington; Dr. Pearse Lyons, president of Alltech; and Paul Findlay, vice president of Robinson Construction, turned the dirt to begin construction of Alltech’s $4.5 million distillery.

[Lexington, KY] – Shovels slid into soft dirt Friday as Alltech broke ground on its $4.5 million distillery project in downtown Lexington, Ky. Located adjacent to the company’s brewery, the 20,000 square foot facility will house production and storage for Alltech’s Pearse Lyons Reserve whiskey, Bluegrass Sundown after-dinner Bourbon coffee beverage, and soon-to-be-released Bourbon. The project is expected to take approximately one year, making the anticipated completion date September 2012.

“In a time of economic downturn, this distillery project is of great significance,” said Dr. Pearse Lyons, president and founder of Alltech. “Because of the success our beverages have experienced, particularly within the last few years, we are able to fund the future, not just for Alltech but the local community through the creation of jobs.”

Alltech’s Beverage Division, LLC, currently employs 34 people, 14 of whom were hired within the last year. The division’s continued expansion is expected to create a dozen additional jobs within the next year outside of construction.

Located in downtown Lexington, Ky., Alltech’s Lexington Brewing and Distilling Company has been crafting award-winning beers since 2000.  Kentucky Ale was launched in that year, Kentucky Light followed in 2003 and Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale completed Kentucky’s Triple Crown of Beers  in 2006. The beers are now sold in Kentucky, Ohio, Massachusetts, Indiana, Wisconsin, South Dakota and Tennessee, and the company intends to expand distribution to several other states by the year’s end.

09-10-11 ASI WEEKLY NEWS FOR SHEEP INDUSTRY LEADERS

Posted by Brian Allmer on September 10, 2011

Senate Committee Approves Ag Appropriations Bill

The U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee this week approved fiscal year 2012 legislation for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to fund discretionary agriculture and nutrition spending programs. The bill would provide $19.8 billion in discretionary spending, a decrease of 0.7 percent from current spending, compared with the $17.2 billion contained in the bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives.

The American Sheep Industry Association (ASI) and state sheep-producer associations worked specifically to increase the operations funding for USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service’s Wildlife Services (WS) Agency and secured $72.5 million in the Senate bill to match the increased funding approved by the full House.

This funding for WS more than covers the lost earmarks for predator control that were removed last winter in the continuing resolution funding of 2011. Additionally, report language was included that specifically mentions predation and sheep as supported by Sen. Tim Johnson (S.D.).

Peter Orwick, ASI executive director, relays the importance of increased funding to WS operations and highlights the report language, “The committee is concerned with the ever increasing loses of livestock to predation. Predation continues to be the single largest cause of death loss of sheep, and losses of other livestock are rising. The committee urges the secretary to exercise all of his authority to address this economically devastating situation facing America’s farmers and ranchers.”

The committee approved the bill on a voice vote, and it now goes to the Senate floor.

09-10-11 *US Wheat Associates* Philippines Milling Executive Team to Focus on Trade, U.S. Wheat Crop Quality

Posted by Brian Allmer on September 10, 2011

ARLINGTON, Virginia – A team of senior executives from the Philippines flour milling industry will be in the United States Sept. 11 to 18 to meet with U.S. policy makers about ongoing issues with unfairly priced flour imports and to learn more about the 2011 U.S. soft white (SW), hard red spring (HRS) and hard red winter (HRW) wheat crops. U.S Wheat Associates (USW) is sponsoring this trade team with support from state wheat commissions in Oregon and North Dakota, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service, and private exporters.

Efforts by some countries to bolster domestic wheat production and their domestic milling industry is encouraging to flour exports to the Philippines and other South Asian countries at prices below the local fair market prices. Philippine millers and USW believe these practices distort trade, may violate established trade agreement commitments and may jeopardize long-term food security in the Philippines.

“The U.S. wheat industry has worked with Philippine flour millers and wheat foods producers for the past 50 years to help improve flour and end-product quality,” said USW Assistant Regional Director for South Asia Joe Sowers, who will join the milling executives in the United States. “In marketing year 2010/11, more than 90 percent of their wheat imports came from the United States.” The Philippines was the second largest importer of both hard red spring (HRS) and soft white (SW) with a value of nearly $530 million in 2010/11, so the displacement of locally produced flour also represents a direct loss for U.S. wheat producers.

CHECK out the interview with Dr Dennis Lamm regarding the 30th CSU AgDay coming up this Saturday, September 10th in Ft Collins…

FORT COLLINS - Football and food. Is there a better combination? This Saturday, for the 30th consecutive year, Colorado State University hosts Ag Day, featuring a celebration of Colorado’s agricultural industry and the bounty of food it produces. This year’s feast, which will be served from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on the south side of Sonny Lubick Field Hughes Stadium, will also serve as a kickoff to the home football season for CSU. The Rams will play the University of Northern Colorado Bears at noon.

The game-day spirit befits the purpose of Ag Day: Since its inception, the event has raised money for scholarships granted to deserving students in the College of Agricultural Sciences.

Each year, Ag Day proceeds contribute to between 12 and 15 $2,000 student scholarships. Since 2000, Ag Day has funded more than 125 scholarships totaling more than $225,000 for CSU agricultural students.

This year, 12 students from the College of Agricultural Sciences have been awarded $2,000 scholarships. These scholarship winners come from a variety of disciplines – from animal sciences to landscape architecture, soil and crop sciences to equine sciences.

Sarah Puerner, an Equine Sciences major, is one of this year’s dozen Ag Day Scholarship winners.

“This specific scholarship is helping me achieve my academic goals because I wouldn’t be able to attend CSU without scholarship help. With the help from our community and our university, I am able to attend CSU and will be graduating this May,” said Puerner, who competes for the CSU Horse Judging Team and looks forward to pursuing a professional judging career.

“I am the first member of my family to attend college and this is why I do not take education lightly.”
