It is disappointing to see the extreme lack of leadership Congresswoman Betsy Markey displayed in her vote against health care reform. If Congresswoman Markey believes in a public option with heavy influence, if not outright control of health care by our government, then she should own it.
Through the course of debate and passage of the health reform bill, Betsy Markey did everything she could to get it passed. She voted for all the procedural votes, against the motion to recommit, and she voted to allow taxpayer-funded abortions. As a result, she cast all the votes necessary to make it pass except the vote for final passage. If she had such a problem with the bill, why didn’t she offer amendments or even vote against bringing it to the floor to begin with? Instead, she voted against every alternative, against allowing more debate, against allowing more amendments. She doesn’t oppose the health care reform bill; she supports it whole heartedly only she is too afraid of losing her job to vote for it.
Her vote had nothing to do with cost. If she were worried about “cost” she would not have voted for the stimulus package – the one with all the pork and the one with slightly less pork.
The real story is this – her vote was actually worse than a yes vote. This is not the leadership the voters of the fourth congressional district or Colorado expect and deserve. Congresswoman Markey has some explaining to do.
